Have you ever wondered where some of the numbers come for in long division or why you do things that way? Like multiplication, division is another algorithm that we do because we were told to.

In order to understand why its done this way, we need to understand the parts.

The problem that we are going to look at is:


The first step is going to be to rewrite the problem. So that the divisor is outside of the division bar (house) and the dividend is inside the division bar.

 When finished with the steps you want to start over with step 2. In this case you want to figure out how many times 2 goes into 8. this can be called the DMS Loop, or the division, multiplication, and subtraction loop.
